Aboriginal Success Stories

Would you like to tell us about a success story? Great. We are looking for stories that inspire. They don’t have to be huge things, but simply stories that may inspire another aboriginal person to take that extra step to try harder to achieve a goal, whatever that goal is.

To give you some ideas as to what we’ll post here, try these ideas:

  • Your communities hockey team worked hard and just won a tournament.
  • Your business just landed a big contract.
  • Your company is expanding and is hiring because of new work.
  • A youth in your community just got a scholarship.
  • An elder just received an award for community service.
  • A local business just made the local newspaper

Those are just a few ideas. What we want are stories that inspire.

It could just be something you were part of that made you proud. I’ll give you an example.

    From David Lewis:

Driving to give your kids a chance

“My oldest daughter had the opportunity to try out for Team Ontario to play basketball at the recent North American Indigenous Games. Tryouts were a six hour drive away. So, off we drove.

The night prior to the tryout, there was a dinner for all participants. It was an opportunity to meet other parents, and kids to meet other competitors, and future team mates.

I was tired from our six hour drive ... until I started talking to parents that drove 2-3 days, 22+ hours, or took a train for two days because there are no roads into their community!

I was inspired! Here were parents giving their time, and a long drive, so their kids could have a chance to compete at a North American tournament - a once in a life time event. It made my six hours seem rather small.

Dedication is a huge thing, and talking to these parents made me proud to know that my daughter would be, maybe, playing on teams with their kids.

So, my daughter made the team, spent a week at the games, and came back saying “I wish I went to school with these kids.” Kids that she now has as friends.

      Pretty cool.”
